Özet

Although it is known that translation activities in the Ottoman Empire have existed since the establishment of the Empire in 1299, it was only in the 18th century that written translation activities gained importance and pace. While the great European states had been sending students to the Ottoman Empire to train translators, the Ottoman's institutional orientation to translation became only possible when the Ottomans realized that they were lagging behind the West after losing wars. The foundation of the Translation Chamber of Sublime Port in 1821 was undoubtedly among the most important innovations made to catch up with the developments in the West. In this article, Mehmet Tahir Munif Effendi, who became the pioneer in several fields with his translations thanks to the foreign language education he got in the Translation Chamber, will be analyzed in terms of his translator identity. The characteristics of the period and their effects on the translator's career will also be studied.
