Özet
Microbial cell populations are typically described by averaged properties although individual cells present a certain degree of variability in properties such as age and mass even when growing in a homogeneous environment. Understanding cell heterogeneity is crucial because, in a partitioning bioreactor, the microbial cells are kept at the desired state of metabolic activity by adjusting the nutrient levels and reactor variables. in order to address the implications of heterogeneity, the so-called population balance model (PBM) approach is used. the chapter proposes a novel numerical approach based on an improved spectral method, to solve the bivariate (age-mass) cell population balance model when non-linear growth is considered. the method is faster than the conventional higher order finite difference approaches and is slightly different from the conventional spectral method in two ways, namely the choice of the basis functions and the method to obtain the time evolution of the coefficients.
