Testosterone levels in men with rheumatoid arthritis

Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, prednisolon alan ve almayan romatoid artrit'Ji (RA) erkek hastalarda testesteron, FSH ve LH düzeylerini'saptamak ve sağlıklı kontrollerle karşılaştırmaktır. Yaşları 32-69 arasında olan RA'li 22 erkekte ve 28-76 yaşlarındaki 54 kontrolde serbest ve to¬tal testesteron, FSH ve LH düzeyleri ölçüldü.RA grubu; 5-10 mg/gün prednisolon alanlarve almayanlar şeklinde ikiye bölündü. Sağlıklı kontrollerle karşılaştırıldığında, RA'li hastalarda; serbest ve total testesteron düzeyi daha düşüktü, sadece prednisolon alan RA'li hastalarla kontroller arasındaki fark anlamlıydı (p<0.05). Sağlıklı kontrollerle karşılaştırıldığında RA'li hastalarda FSH ve LH düzeyleri daha yüksekti, yalnız prednisolon alan RA'li hastalarla kontroller arasındaki LH düzeyi farkı anlamlıydı (P<0.05). Prednisolon almayan hastalarla karşılaştırıldığında, prednisolon alan hastalarda testesteron düzeyleri daha düşük; FSH, LH düzeyleri daha yüksekti. Sonuç olarak RA'li erkek hastalarda özellikle prednisolon alanlarda, sağlıklı kontrollere göre testesteron düzeyleri daha düşük, FSH ve LH düzeyleri daha yüksekti.
The aim of this study was to determine the levels'of testosterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in male patients with rheu¬matoid arthritis (RA) who are taking and not taking prednisolone, and to compare with the healthy con¬trols. The levels of free and total testosterone, FSH and ]LH were measured in 22 men aged 32-69 who had RA and in 54 healthy male controls, aged 28-76. The group with RA were divided into those taking 5-10 mg/day prednisolone and those taking no pred-nisone. Compared to the healthy controls, patients with RA had lower free and total testoserone levels, only the difference between patients with RA taking prednisolone and controls was.significant (p<0.05). Compared to the healthy controls, patients with RA had higher levels of FSH and LH, only the difference of LH levels between patients with RA taking pred¬nisolone and controls was significant. Compared to the patients not taking prednisolone, patients taking prednisolone had lower levels of testosterone and higher levels of FSH and LH. In conclusion, male patients with RA, especially who are taking predniso¬lone, have lower levels of testosterone and higher lev¬els of FSH and LH, when compared to the healthy controls.
