The influence of age on cerebrospinal fluıd endorphin levels

The main goal of this study was to examine the influence of age on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) endorphin levels. Secondary goal was to compare the endorphin levels of patients with pain and patients under general anaesthesia with the values of painless adult patients. CSF endorphin levels of 28 adult patients aged 32±3 without any history of pain were measured and compared with the values of 20 children aged 5±1 without pain. Endorphin levels of 32 adult patients (29±3) with pain and 6 adult patients (44±5) under general anaesthesia were also determined. Endorphins were extracted and assayed on electrically stimulated mouse vas deferens. Student's t test was used for statistical analysis and p<0.05 values were considered to be significant. Regression analysis was used to determine the correlation between ages and met-enkephalin levels. No significant difference was observed when the values of children without pain f 2.86 ± 0.48 pmol/ml) were compared with, the endorphin levels of the adult pain-free patients. Endorphin levels of the patients with pain were found to be significantly lower (0.33 ± 0.15 pmol/ml) than pain-free adult patients (2.27 ± 0.33 pmol/ml) while the levels of the patients under anaesthesia (3.86 ± 0.98 pmol/ml) showed no significant difference from the adult patients with no history of pain. No correlation was found between the ages and CSF endorphin levels of children. We concluded that age is not a factor that influences CSF endorphin levels.
