Özet
Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate surgical and percutaneous closure of secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) in terms of cost-effectiveness. Material and Method: Consecutive 100 pediatric patients who admitted to our hospital between 2010 and 2013 were included in the cost analysis: 50 who underwent surgical repair and 50 who underwent percutaneous closure with the Amplatzer septal occluder. Hospital generated cost data of this patients were collated at discharge. Results: Percutaneous ASD closure was successfully performed in 48 patients (96%) and failed in two patients (4%). Surgical closure (directly in eight patients and by pericardial patch in 42 patients) was performed successfully in all patients. Median hospital stay was not significantly longer for surgical group (1.8 to 4.2, p<0.001) days. The median cost was significantly higher for percutaneous group (10,698 TL to 5,572 TL, p<0.001). Conclusion: Despite percutaneous closure of secundum ASD which started to replace surgical treatment of ASD in last decades is safe and effective method, comparing other countries in terms of cost was determined twice more expensive based on surgical closure. © Nobel İlaç AŞ.
