ABSTRACT COMPARATIVE STUDIES on TRICHOME TYPES and DENSITY of some TOBACCO CULTIVARS of THE AEGEAN REGION MAYDA, Sedef MSc in Field Crops Department Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Ülkü EMÎROĞLU August, 78 pages The trichome types and densities were compared on leaves taken from four tobacco cultivars of the Aegean Region. (Karabağlar 6265, İzmir- Özbaş, Ege 64 and Sanbağlar 402) Intra-plant variation of trichomes was determined by taking samples from lower, middle and upper leaves. In addition, intra-leaf distribution of trichomes was also investigated by taking samples from the base, middle and the tip part of the leaves. In all cultivars investigated, the densities of glandular hairs, tecteur hairs and stomata increased gradually from lower leaves to upper leaves. In upper epidermis the densities of short-stalked hairs, branched glandular hairs and tecteur hairs were found to be higher, however the densities of long-stalked hairs and stomata were found to be higher in lower epidermis. The number of glandular hairs per unit area was found to be highest in Sanbağlar 402 and İzmir-Özbaş and lowest in Ege 64. The density of tecteur hairs was found to be highest in Îzmir-Özbaş and lowest in Ege 64.iv Genellikle, yaprakların dip kısmından uç kısmına doğru gidildikçe salgı tüy sayısı artarken, koruyucu tüy sayısı azalmıştır.
