Complexes of N,N?-1,3-propylenebis(salicylaldimine) Schiff base (LH2) with three lighter lanthanides (Nd, Sm, Gd) have first been synthesized. These compounds have analyzed satisfactorily for Ln(LH2)2(NO3)3.nH2O (n=0 for Gd, and n=2 for Nd and Sm). Their structures have been determined through IR, TGA, DTA, XRD and LC/MS. Schiff base has retained its neutrality and coordinated the lanthanide(III) ion in a bidentate fashion through oxygen atoms. All three nitrates have been in chleating bidentate mode and lanthanide ions are decacoordinate. These lanthanide complexes have been then reacted with copper(II) acetate monohydrate to yield compounds of formula LnCu2(L)2 (H2O)4(NO3)3.0,25H2O (Ln: Nd, Sm or Gd). The structures of these heteronuclear compounds have been elucidated by means of IR, TGA, DTA, XRD and LC/MS. Schiff base has been dianionic in these complexes and coordinated lanthanide (III) ion in a bidentate, but, copper(II) ions in a tetradentate fashion. Two nitrates have been coordinated to lanthanide ion in a chelating bidentate mode, and the third one to one of copper(II) ions in a unidentate fashion. The lanthanide ion is nine-coordinated by the oxygen atoms of two Cu(L) moieties, two bidentate nitrate ions, and one water molecule; copper (II) ions are hexacoordinate. The magnetic moments of all complexes hve been determined via magnetic susceptibility measurements at room temperature. Key words: Lanthanide, Schiff Base, Copper, Magnetic Moment
