"At the stillness of unfinished action, at the spaces on the page": Mental space as the fifth dimension of poetry in Eavan Boland's work

Bu tez, Eavan Boland'ın şiirlerini yarattıkları zihinsel mekanlar açısından incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. M. H. Abrams'ın bir şiiri okumanın dört boyutu üzerine yazmış olduğu kuramı ilerleten bu çalışma, şiir okurken okuyucunun zihninde yaratılan zihinsel mekanları beşinci bir boyut olarak ele almaktadır. Ayrıca, zihinsel mekanların kapsamlı bir incelemesini oluşturmak için Henri Lefebvre'nin ritimanaliz kuramı, Doreen Massey'in mekan ve mekanın dinamik doğası üzerine çalışmaları ve Christopher Collins'in anlamsal taktikler ve bilişsel modlar kavramları gibi birçok farklı yaklaşım bir araya getirilmiştir. Bu amaca uygun olarak tez iki ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. İlk bölüm böylesine kapsamlı bir çalışma için gerekli olan kuramsal çerçevenin oluşturulmasına odaklanırken, ikinci bölüm ağırlıklı olarak şiirlerin analizine yoğunlaşmakta ve her bir şiirin anlamsal, ritmik ve bilişsel yönlerini ayrıntılı olarak inceleyerek şiirsel zihinsel mekanların nasıl oluştuğunu araştırmaktadır. Ayrıca, Boland'ın şiirlerini okurken oluşan zihinsel mekanları keşfetmek amacıyla, toplam yirmi şiir şairin kullandığı ana temalara göre dört kategoriye ayrılmıştır. Boland'ın mitolojiden ilham alan şiirlerine odaklanan ilk kategori, iki alt bölüme ayrılmıştır. İlk alt bölüm, Boland'ın "Tirade for the Mimic Muse," "Tirade for the Epic Muse," "Tirade for the Lyric Muse" ve "Envoi" adlı şiirlerdeki Müzlerin yorumlanmasına odaklanırken, ikinci alt bölüm şairin mitolojik anlatıları yeniden yorumladığı "Athene's Song," "The Pomegranate," "Formal Feeling" ve "Eurydice Speaks" adlı şiirlerdeki odak noktasında tutmaktadır. İkinci kategori, Boland'ın tarihi ve tarihsel olayları ele alışını temsil edişini "That the Science of Cartography is Limited," "Lava Cameo", "A Habitable Grief" ve "Two Waters" şiirleri üzerinde inceler. Üçüncü kategori, "It's a Woman's World", "Outside History", "Anonymity" ve "The Historians" şiirleriyle geçmişte ve günümüzde kadınların anlatılmamış öyküleri ve tarihleri etrafında dönen anlatılardan oluşmaktadır. Son kategori, "Suburban Woman", "Ode to Suburbia", "Suburban Woman: A Detail" ve "Suburban Woman: Another Detail" adlı şiirler aracılığıyla Boland'ın banliyöyü ele alışına odaklanmaktadır. Bu şiirlerin incelenmesi ve analizi yoluyla, bu çalışma, sadece şiirsel zihinsel mekanların anlaşılması ve saptanması için teorik çerçevenin kurulmasını amaçlamakla kalmaz, aynı zamanda Eavan Boland'ın şiirlerini okuyarak oluşan zihinsel mekanları incelemeyi ve keşfetmeyi de amaçlar.
This dissertation aims to examine Eavan Boland's poetic works in terms of the mental spaces they create within the minds of the readers. Furthering M. H. Abrams' theory of the four dimensions of reading a poem, this study considers the mental spaces created by reading works of poetry, the fifth dimension. Moreover, in order to create a comprehensive examination of the mental spaces, several different approaches are combined, such as Henri Lefebvre's study of rhythmanalysis, Doreen Massey's study on the dynamic nature of space, along with Christopher Collins' concepts of semantic tactics and cognitive modes. To achieve this, the dissertation comprises two main chapters. While the first chapter focuses on establishing the theoretical framework required for such an extensive study, the second chapter mainly concentrates on the analysis of the poems and explores the way poetic mental spaces are formed, by examining the semantic, rhythmic and cognitive aspects of each poem in detail. Moreover, in order to explore the mental spaces formed by reading Boland's poetry, twenty poems are divided into four categories based on the main themes utilized by the poet. Focusing on Boland's mythologically inspired poems, the first category is divided into two subsections. The first subsection concentrates on Boland's rendition of the Muses with the poems, "Tirade for the Mimic Muse," "Tirade for the Epic Muse," Tirade for the Lyric Muse" and "Envoi", whereas the second subsection maintains its focus on the poet's retellings of mythical narratives in the poems "Athene's Song," "The Pomegranate," "Formal Feeling" and "Eurydice Speaks". The following category consists of poems that are representative of Boland's treatment of history, such as "That the Science of Cartography is Limited," "Lava Cameo", "A Habitable Grief" and "Two Waters". The third category comprises poems that are revolving around the untold stories and histories of women in past and present such as "It's a Woman's World", "Outside History", "Anonymity" and "The Historians". The final category concentrates on Boland's treatment of the suburbia through the poems "Suburban Woman", "Ode to Suburbia", "Suburban Woman: A Detail" and "Suburban Woman: Another Detail". Consequently, through the examination and analysis of these poems, this study aims not only to establish the theoretical framework for the understanding and establishment of the poetic mental spaces but also to examine and explore the mental spaces formed by reading poems of Eavan Boland.
