ABSTRACT INVESTIGATIONS ON THE EFFECTS OF OPEN AND CLOSED SYSTEMS ON YIELD, WATER AND NUTRIENT CONSUMPTION OF THE CUCUMBER PLANTS GROWN BY SOILLESS CULTURE CANATAR, Ebru Msc Agricultural Eng. Supervisor: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ayşe GÜL August, 1997, 51 pages Studies on soilless culture in Turkey demonstrated that substrate culture is suitable to our conditions and growers have started to use this technique. In substrate culture nutrient solution can be applied in two different systems viz open and closed systems. In an open system nutrient solution is drained out after being used only once, while in closed system the drained nutrient solution is recirculated. Closed system is appreciated for its less water and nutrient requirement and is known for less environmental pollution. This experiment was planned according to the split-split plot design with three replications. Three different varieties of cucumber were grown in vertical and horizontal bags containing 8 liters of perlite per plant by utilizing open and closed system. Vertical and horizontal bags contained one and two plants per bag, respectively. Results obtained indicated that there was no difference in respect of plant growth, yield and quality of fruits in open and closed system. Horizontal bags gave significantly better results regarding plant growth and yield. Difference in plant growth and total yield were noted among different varieties, but earyl yield was not effected. It was determined that closed system reduced the water and nutrient consumption by about 25 and 35 %, respectively. Key words: cucumber, soilless culture, open system, closed system, perlite, vertical bag, horizontal bag.
