Özet

Backround: It is known that effective symptom management of chronic obstructive pulmonary patients can be achieved with an active patient participating in their own care. Objective: To determine the activity level, the factors affecting the activity and the relationship between the activity level and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional and relational study was conducted in 120 patients with COPD between November 2019 and March 2020 in a chest diseases clinic of a university hospital. Data were collected using the Patient Identification Form, COPD Assessment Test, Patient Activation Measure (PAM), St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire for quality of life. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results: Individuals had PAM score a mean of 67.05 ± 14.69, CAT score mean of 22.33 ± 7.48, SGRQ symptom score mean of 55.80 ± 20.23, SGRQ activity score mean of 74.78 ± 21.59, SGRQ effect score mean of 49.78 ± 21.30, and SGRQ total score mean of 58.35 ± 20.00. It was found statistically significant and negative correlation between PAM and CAT (r =-.415; p =.01), statistically significant and negative correlation between PAM and SGRQ total score (r =-.529; p =.01), between CAT and SGRQ total score a statistically significant and positive correlation (r = 0.846; p =.01). PAM level decreases as CAT and age increase (R2 =.247). PAM level decreases as SGRQ total score and age increase (R2 =.329). Conclusion: The activity level was found to be high in patients with COPD. As the patient’s activity level increases, the quality of life increases. Age, education level, income status, employment status, duration of illness, COPD stage, annual number of hospitalizations, annual attacks, COPD status and quality of life are factors affecting patient activity. As the patient’s activity level increases, the quality of life increases. © 2023, Dokuz Eylul University. All rights reserved.
