Özet

Spacer fabrics are three-dimensional (3D) textiles that have two fabric surfaces connected together with spacer yarns or layers. Due to their 3D composition, spacer fabrics have special requirements that conventional textiles are unable to meet. Compression, breathability, high elastic recovery, high water vapor transfer properties, etc. are the main characteristics of spacer fabrics. Because of the ability to use a number of various materials, good performance properties, and 3D construction, spacer textiles have found applications in the fields of medical textiles, automotive textiles, composites, protective textiles, sportswear, etc. Additionally, these materials are utilized in different technical application fields through various techniques, including coating and lamination. The technologies of nonwoven, weaving, and knitting can be used to manufacture spacer textiles, and both weft and warp knitting techniques are the most commonly used techniques for the production of spacer fabrics. Weft-knitted spacer fabrics can be manufactured on both the electronic V-bed flat knitting machine and the double jersey circular knitting machine using a variety of fiber types. In this technique, two separate fabric layers are knitted with two sets of needles and are connected by tuck loops. Flat knitting machines have a strong potential for the production of spacer fabrics in preform shapes. These preforms could be used for the manufacturing of composites that have less waste and shorter production times. On the other hand, thanks to the many technical advantages warp knitting technology offers various spacer fabrics in different structures and properties. Spacer fabrics knitted with both techniques are frequently used for medical textiles, protective textiles, automotive textiles, composites, sports textiles, and equipment. In this chapter, recent advances in the field of spacer-knitted fabrics produced with both weft and warp knitting techniques, as well as innovative application areas and approaches where these structures are used, will be investigated. © 2024 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
