Özet

Humorous gestures in the theatric genres like shadow theatre Karagöz, middle play Orta Oyunu, dramatic village plays and the traditional storyteller Meddah, are mostly depend on verbal humor; and gesture humor. Most of the studies on the humorous elements in the Turkish folk theatre focus on to the verbal humor in the narrations. However, gesture humor is as important as the verbal humor in determining the humorous structure in Turkish folk theatre and in defining how laughter occurs. Because gesture humor mostly has the function of supporting the verbal humor, however; in some cases it just forms the main structure of creating the laughter. In this article, humorous elements that belong to gesture humor in Karagöz, Orta Oyunu, dramatic village plays and, traditional storyteller Meddah are analyzed through the theories of humor by determining with its samples; besides the function and place of elements in gesture humor in Turkish folk theater is discussed. Eventually, it is found out that elements of gesture humor are observed abundantly in terms of types and rigmaroles. Additionally, it is put forward that elements of gesture humor end up laughter which can be identified by;conflict; and;superiority; theories and its function of supporting the verbal humor is generally observed when the laughter is occurred as a result of a relief.
