Özet
One of the areas of sovereignty lost by the Ottoman State by signing the Mondros Armistice was its dominance over the seas. Seza-yi Nur Steamboat became one of the ferries carrying passengers and commercial goods between Izmir and Istanbul during the Armistice Period, when the dominance over the seas was lost. She made her first voyage between Izmir and Istanbul in December 1918 and departed from Izmir port on 7 February 1919 to make her second voyage. The ferry, which also stopped at the Ayvalik and Edremit ports on its route, set out to reach Istanbul on 10 February 1919 and no news could be received from the ferry after this date. As a result of the investigations, it was determined that the Greek government confiscated the ferry. An application was made to Greece to take back the ferry and a delegation consisting of the representatives of the Entente States was sent to Greece to bring the ferry back. However, the delegation sent to Greece did not find any traces of the ferry and it was not possible to find any new information about the ferry. In the press of the period, it was stated that there was no possibility other than the steamer had sunk, and there were some articles towards that the Seza-yi Nur Steamboat had sunk. Despite news in the press that the Seza-yi Nur Steamboat had sunk, the competent authorities of the Ottoman State did not officially announce the sinking of the ship, which caused many people with relatives and commercial goods on the boat to experience various aggrievements. It was up to Republic of Turkey to eliminate these long-lasting aggrievements. By investigating the fate of the Seza-yi Nur Steamboat, a final decision was reached and the resulting aggrievements were ended. © 2020, Hacettepe University. All rights reserved.
