Özet
Objective: Measuring cervical length by transvaginal ultrasound in second trimester for preventing preterm delivery and determining the cervical changes before cervical dilatation. Material and Methods: In this prospective study cervical length was measured by transvaginal ultrasound in 207 asymptomatic woman with singleton pregnancies between 20-26 weeks of gestation from August 2008 to September 2009 in Ege University. The exclusion criteria included multiple gestations, history of preterm delivery, fetal and uterine anomalies and obstetric diseases like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Then all patients were followed up and the relationship between cervical lenght and preterm labor was evaluated. Results: Although two hundred and seven singleton pregnancies met the inclusion criteria during the study period, we could not reach 5 of them. The rate of preterm delivery was 10.2%. The mean age of all pregnants were 27.9/year (18-43 year). The mean cervical lenght of preterm delivery group was significantly shorter than term group (29.2 mm, 38.1 mm respectively) (p< 0.001). Six women whose cervical lenghts were measured less than 25 mm, had preterm delivery before 37 weeks of gestation. Fifteen (%7.5) women that had longer cervix than 25 mm, couldn't save themselves from preterm labour (p< 0.001). Conclusion: While shortened cervical lenght can predict early development in asymptomatic women in second trimestr, normal cervical lenght can not exactly exclude preterm delivery.
