Özet

Sustainability is the actions taken to protect natural resources and transfer them to future generations and prevent waste by considering environmental, economic, and social responsibilities together. This approach has led to the development of waste management and recycling concepts. In this way, the consumption of natural resources is reduced and it benefits the environment and the economy. Practices that promote waste management and recycling should continue and sustainability principles should be adopted. The recycling of textile waste helps to conserve natural resources and reduce the amount of waste, as in other wastes. The reuse of recycled textile materials saves energy, water, and resources, as well as reduces the carbon footprint. The usage capacity of natural fibers, especially cotton, is quite high all over the world. Water and chemical material consumption are very high in cotton production. This situation reduces the scarce water resources and the chemicals used cause environmental pollution, and thus global warming. Therefore, recycling of textile waste is an important step for a sustainable future. Today, the textile industry focused on the development of innovative technologies for environmentally friendly and sustainable production. The performance properties of fabrics produced with the use of recycled textiles also gain importance. Recycled textiles, especially cotton and polyester-containing fabric scraps, or second-hand materials, are obtained by various processes. Intensive research and studies are carried out to recycle the wastes formed from these raw materials, as well as other textile raw materials. Textile surfaces obtained by recycling can vary in terms of many properties such as strength, flexibility, softness, surface unevenness, thermal comfort, and fastness, depending on their raw materials, blend ratios, knitting structures, and processes. The performance properties expected from the obtained fabrics vary according to the use area of that fabric. Improving the performance properties of recycled textile materials in accordance with their usage areas is important both in terms of increasing sustainability and the use of fabrics produced with recycled materials in the apparel industry. Within the scope of this study, it is aimed to investigate the studies conducted to investigate the performance properties of the surfaces obtained by recycling and to evaluate the results obtained. © 2024 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
